As artificial intelligence continues to advance, so too does the sophistication of these digital actors, prompting a growing body of interdisciplinary research aimed at understanding their impact, behavior, and governance.

Among the scholars leading this inquiry is Gao Shanbing, an associate professor and master’s supervisor at the School of Journalism and Communication, Nanjing Normal University. His recent analysis, published in Yuejiang Academic Journal, offers a comprehensive overview of global research trends in social robotics, drawing on bibliometric methods to map the field’s intellectual contours. The study, which examines international publications from 2010 to 2020, reveals a sharp increase in academic interest, with peak output reaching 163 papers in 2019 alone. This surge reflects not only technological advancements but also mounting societal concerns about the role of automation in shaping public opinion.

The research landscape for social robots is inherently interdisciplinary, spanning 61 distinct academic fields. Computer science and engineering dominate the domain, accounting for the majority of technical contributions related to detection algorithms and behavioral modeling. However, disciplines such as communication studies, philosophy, law, and psychology have increasingly engaged with the ethical, legal, and social implications of these technologies. This convergence underscores the complexity of social robots as both technical artifacts and socio-political actors.

From a geographic perspective, the United States leads global research output with 235 publications, representing 37.24% of the total corpus analyzed. The United Kingdom follows with 61 papers, or 9.83%, while other nations trail significantly behind. At the institutional level, over 600 organizations worldwide have contributed to the field, including prominent Chinese universities such as Beijing Normal University and Harbin Institute of Technology. This global participation highlights the transnational nature of the challenge posed by social robots, particularly in the context of cross-border information operations and digital influence campaigns.

One of the central themes in current research, as identified by Gao, is the governance of social robots through technological means. This includes two primary subdomains: detection and simulation. Detection efforts focus on developing computational tools capable of identifying bot accounts based on behavioral patterns, linguistic features, and network structures. Machine learning models, anomaly detection systems, and metadata analysis are among the key methodologies employed. Simulation, on the other hand, involves creating controlled environments where researchers can observe and track the activities of social robots in real time. These experimental setups help refine detection techniques and inform defensive strategies against coordinated disinformation campaigns.

A landmark case study frequently cited in this context is the 2016 U.S. presidential election, during which researchers from Indiana University Bloomington analyzed 14 million tweets and found that social robots played a critical role in amplifying false information. Their findings revealed that bots were disproportionately active in spreading low-credibility content, often targeting polarized communities and exploiting algorithmic amplification mechanisms inherent in platforms like Twitter. Similar patterns were observed during the French presidential election, reinforcing the notion that social robots are not isolated phenomena but part of a broader trend in digital political interference.

Beyond detection and political influence, another major research strand examines user perception and attitude toward social robots. Early studies concentrated on observable behaviors such as retweets, replies, and likes, treating social robots primarily as data points in network analysis. More recent work, however, has shifted toward understanding how users cognitively and emotionally respond to interactions with automated agents. Do people recognize when they are engaging with a bot? How does such awareness affect trust in information sources? What psychological mechanisms underlie the acceptance or rejection of bot-generated content?

Gao’s team has been exploring these questions using experimental psychology frameworks. By designing controlled online interactions and measuring user responses, they aim to uncover the subtle cues that differentiate human and machine communication. Preliminary findings suggest that while users may not always detect bots explicitly, they often sense something “off” about certain interactions—what scholars refer to as the “uncanny valley” of digital communication. This intuitive discomfort could serve as a foundation for future interface designs that enhance transparency and accountability.

A fourth research theme centers on the comparative analysis of behavioral differences between social robots and human users. This includes examining variables such as posting frequency, timing of messages, linguistic complexity, sentiment expression, profile imagery, and thematic focus. For instance, bots tend to exhibit higher posting rates, operate across multiple time zones without fatigue, and display more consistent emotional valence compared to humans, who show greater variability in mood and expression. Profile pictures used by bots are often generic or synthetically generated, lacking the personal touch typical of authentic accounts.

These distinguishing features form the basis of many detection systems currently in use. However, as AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated, the gap between human and bot behavior continues to narrow. Deepfake avatars, natural language generation models, and adaptive learning algorithms enable bots to mimic human idiosyncrasies with increasing accuracy. This evolution poses a significant challenge for researchers and platform moderators alike, necessitating continuous innovation in detection methodologies.

Despite the growing body of knowledge, several critical issues remain underexplored. One of the most pressing is the lack of localized research outside Western digital ecosystems. As Gao notes, much of the existing literature relies heavily on data from Twitter, a platform with relatively limited penetration in China. In contrast, domestic platforms such as Weibo operate under different regulatory frameworks, cultural norms, and user behaviors, which may influence the deployment and effectiveness of social robots. Without equivalent tools like Botometer—a widely used bot detection service for Twitter—researchers in China face significant barriers in monitoring and analyzing bot activity on local networks.

Moreover, the socio-political context in which social robots function varies dramatically across regions. While Western democracies grapple with concerns about election interference and foreign propaganda, Chinese digital spaces appear less susceptible to large-scale political mobilization via bots. Instead, the primary risks lie in commercial fraud, fanbase manipulation, and privacy violations. For example, some companies employ bot networks to inflate product ratings, manipulate trending topics, or create artificial demand for entertainment content. These practices erode consumer trust and distort market signals, raising new regulatory challenges.

Gao emphasizes that while malicious bots rightly attract scrutiny, the focus should not overshadow the potential benefits of “benevolent bots.” These include automated customer service agents, mental health chatbots, educational assistants, and civic engagement tools. In healthcare, for instance, AI-powered conversational agents have been deployed to provide psychological support to individuals experiencing anxiety or depression. In education, tutoring bots offer personalized learning experiences, particularly in underserved communities. Recognizing this duality is essential for developing balanced policies that mitigate harm without stifling innovation.

Another frontier in social robot research involves expanding the analytical scope beyond text-based social media. With the proliferation of smart speakers, in-vehicle assistants, and embodied conversational agents, the definition of “social” interaction is undergoing transformation. Devices like Amazon Echo, Apple Siri, and automotive AI systems engage users in voice-based dialogues, forming parasocial relationships that blur the line between tool and companion. These intelligent agents, though not traditionally classified as social robots, share many functional and ethical characteristics with their online counterparts.

Studying these emerging forms of human-AI interaction could challenge established theories in communication, psychology, and sociology. For example, the concept of “media equation”—the tendency for people to treat computers as if they were real social actors—may need to be revised in light of increasingly lifelike AI behaviors. Similarly, theories of trust, agency, and responsibility must be re-evaluated when machines participate in decision-making processes that affect human lives.

Ethical considerations remain at the heart of the debate. Critics argue that the use of social robots in public discourse constitutes a form of deception, especially when bots conceal their non-human identity. This opacity undermines informed consent and distorts democratic deliberation. Some scholars go further, labeling certain bot deployments as corrupt practices that manipulate public opinion for political or commercial gain. The erosion of trust in digital spaces, they warn, could have long-term consequences for social cohesion and institutional legitimacy.

Yet, others caution against overestimating the influence of social robots. Gao’s own research on China-related topics on Twitter suggests that while multiple types of bots may be involved in discussions about the country, their overall impact appears limited. This finding challenges the prevailing narrative of bots as dominant forces in shaping global discourse. It also raises important methodological questions: How do we accurately measure influence? What constitutes meaningful engagement versus mere noise? And how can we distinguish between amplification and persuasion?

To address these challenges, Gao calls for greater methodological rigor and cross-disciplinary collaboration. He advocates for the development of standardized metrics for bot detection, impact assessment, and ethical evaluation. Such standards would enable more reliable comparisons across studies and platforms, fostering a cumulative science of social robotics. Additionally, he stresses the importance of open data and reproducible research, particularly in an era where platform APIs are increasingly restricted.

Policy implications are equally significant. Governments, tech companies, and civil society organizations must work together to establish norms and regulations that promote transparency and accountability. Possible measures include mandatory bot labeling, stricter enforcement of platform terms of service, and public audits of high-impact accounts. At the same time, policymakers must avoid overreach that could stifle free expression or hinder beneficial applications of AI.

Looking ahead, the trajectory of social robot research is likely to follow three interrelated paths: deeper technical refinement, broader ethical reflection, and wider contextual adaptation. As AI systems become more autonomous and socially embedded, the distinction between tool and actor will continue to blur. This evolution demands a rethinking of fundamental concepts such as agency, intentionality, and responsibility.
